For the 2024 Worlds we ran an Insta360 X4 camera on an arm from the motor mount. The series is unedited, just trimmed for time, and full 360 video which you can pan around at will.
I highly recommend clicking through to the reports by Ivan Bulaja, the developer of SailViewer, which provide amazing insight and visualization of the data from multiple Vakaros Atlas 2 instruments used by the fleet.
Overall the event results didn't pan out as we had hoped, we had too many major starting and first beat errors to finish where wanted, but the venue and camaraderie were excellent and we will be back again!
Race 1, Finish: 78/95
Bad start. We got into an altercation with another boat, we felt they made no effort to avoid us. Our protest was deemed invalid on procedural grounds, but the real reminder is you can't even get into this situation in the first place, second row start in a very deep fleet is nearly impossible to come back from without a big dose of luck.
Race 2, Finish: 87/95
Large first left shift set us to mid-fleet moments after the start. Large line is a big lever. The major mistake was taking too much risk on the first run and getting stuck on the wrong side of the increasing left pressure. We plummeted to the back of the fleet and never recovered, getting even deeper by staying too far left on the second beat. From bad to worse.
Race 3, Finish: 19/95
Decent start for us, we stayed in phase on the first beat and rounded in the top quartile. No major errors and decent speed marked our first keeper.
Race 4, Finish: 70/95
Major left shift in final seconds before the start. We missed it and setup to start at the boat. Unable to dig out.
Race 5, Finish: 57/95
More breeze on the left side when sailing in onshore Southerly. This advantage was compounded by the pin bias. We went for open space on the line after poor starting earlier in the series and were one of the right most boats on a 3:1 Port:Starboard beat. Not a good look. We sailed smart the rest of the race, especially beat two, to chip away and salvage a chunk of points.
Race 6, Finish: 11/95
Good start, stayed in phase on the first beat and rounded the first mark in the top 10. Kept pace and had a great race.
Race 7, Finish: 57/95
Good start, great first 2/3s of the beat. As fleet converges we lost a little bit of speed, video shows the mainsheet was too far out, killing pointing and then resulting in a bad feedback loop of frustration and tacking. Able to round in top quartile.
First run was tough, rounding low we were unable to hold high enough to prevent being rolled, then pressed into the corner late. Lost control of our destiny.
Race 8, Finish: 13/95
Major left bias. This time we were ready and able to tack on the first shift. Maintained our position with the top group. Keeper.
