Available regattas for J70 boats in the Pacific Northwest.
Dedicated J70 one-design regattas should be given special attention and every effort to attend. It is rare to have the entire race course dedicated for a single fleet. If the wind cooperates, you will enjoy many more races per day (5,6.7...) and far less traffic on the race course. The Hood River One Design regatta is a great example in a spectacular sailing venue. Where else can you sail on a river in 6 knots of current and 30 knots of breeze?
The most common regattas offer one-design class starts for fleets of 5 boats or more. And usually include several classes of one-design fleets and PHRF classes. If the wind cooperates, you will enjoy 3,4,5... races per day and share the race course with 20 to 50 other boats. Bellingham Pitch & ARW are great examples of well organized events and great sailing venues.
A few regattas are hosted by local yacht clubs and offer great social/party events with PHRF racing for fleets of less than 5 boats, non-spinnaker flying "cruise" classes and can accommodate one-design fleets. The Whidbey Island Summer Classic is a great example.
Please note regattas may be 2 day weekend events and others are hosted during the week. Getting crew to commit to a regatta for a weekend event is far easier than taking vacation days from work during week days. Plan accordingly.
The following regattas are listed in order of calendar date.
The Puget Sound Spring Regatta (PSSR) is hosted in Shilshole Bay by the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle.
